Naledi Modupi is a Johannesburg-based multidisciplinary visual artist known for her bold, emotive portraiture that celebrates femininity, identity, and cultural pride. Her work spans painting, illustration, sculpture, ceramics, and photography, each piece telling layered stories of womanhood, memory, and heritage.
Deeply inspired by the South African women who raised her, Naledi uses line, shape, pattern, and vibrant colour to create abstract portraits that honour their strength, spirit, and beauty. Her visual style bridges tradition and modernity, with a creative practice that fluidly moves between traditional mediums like paint and chalk to digital art and sculptural ceramics.
In 2023, Naledi was named a Design Indaba Emerging Creative, a recognition of her distinctive voice and rising impact in the South African art and design landscape. She has exhibited at major platforms like Decorex and Latitudes Art Fair, and her work was featured at the iconic Victoria & Albert Museum (V&A) in a showcase highlighting African creativity.
Naledi’s growing list of brand collaborations includes Mr Price Home, Adidas, Robersons South Africa, and Converse, where her artistry was used to celebrate storytelling, cultural identity, and creative expression. She has also created original artwork for prominent musicians including Jonathan Butler, Sio, Lulo Café, Charles Webster, Ntsika Fana Ngxanga, Pilani Bubu, Marth Officiel, and Mici Music, bringing a visual voice to the rhythm and soul of their sounds.
Her work has been featured in Homeowner’s Magazine, OkayAfrica, Between 10and5, Colossal, CEC Magazine, SA Creatives, and The Sowetan, positioning her as a powerful voice in contemporary African art.
Her latest venture into ceramics, including a striking collection of bold, vibrant vases, marks an exciting new chapter, one that continues to explore themes of fate, identity, and form, while expanding the scope of her artistic expression.
Through every medium, Naledi Modupi creates work that uplifts, reclaims, and reframes Black womanhood, anchored in love, legacy, and the freedom to tell her own story.
